New Spins: 31st August

Last day of the month, and it's time for some more bands I've been enjoying recently...

Neptunian Maximalism - Éons

Éons | NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM | I, Voidhanger Records

The term mind-bending is often used in heavy music a little too freely (I'm guilty of it myself), but if any album can be described this way then Éons undoubtedly can. This record encompasses improvisational drone doom, free jazz and psychedelic rock into something totally inimitable and truly extraordinary. The record has a deep enveloping theme to it, and is divided into three sections that give focus to different elements of this groups sound. Neptunian Maximalism isn't a band so much as a collective of musicians, and despite the density of the music you can feel so much humanity coming from this album too. If you want to hear something that will open your mind, then find a couple of free hours in your schedule and dive into Éons.

Warrior Pope - Mellified Man

Warrior Pope are an interesting experimental doom outfit from Bristol who take a somewhat angular approach to their fuzzy concoction. Their latest album Mellified Man branches between the kind of dark bluesy riffs and melodies you get from Church of Misery or Weedeater, and combine it with a raw aggression and less than linear song structure. Whilst for the most part they eschew pure heaviness in favour of a more intricate song-craft, when these guys get heavy they can get really heavy! With elements of post-metal thrown into the mix too, Mellified Man is an excellent listen and I've been spinning this record quite a few times the past few weeks.

Dust Lord - Machine Cult

If you like your doom fuzzy and spacey with a nice spoonful of rock'n'roll, a few drops of melancholy and just a dash of psychedelia then Dust Lord from Colorado will likely be to your tastes. They're a nice hybrid bake of stoner and old-school doom, with vocals that sound like they came straight from the early sludge scene. Machine Cult is their first album, and it's a sci-fi themed wonder full of delicious riffs cooked to perfection. This is one to turn up loud and absorb yourself in, it's a stellar record and I'm looking forward to more from these guys.
