New Spins: 1st February 2021

As we head into the second month of 2021 we have three very different artists on New Spins this week. All of them do their respective styles brilliantly and all of them have been standout listens for me this past week.

Mila Drone - Invisible Cloud

Polish artist Mila Drone creates a highly melodic style of drone music that balances the dreamy soundscapes of post-rock acts such as Mogwai, Mono and even early Sigur Ros with the heavy tones and minimalism of Earth. Invisible Cloud is a record that sucks you in quickly to it's haunting ambience and keeps you there perpetually, with the simple compositions building an ethereal quality across it's nine tracks. The minimalism is actually quite bold and it allows the detail and depth of these sounds to shine through brilliantly. A great album with a beautiful enveloping aura to it.

Ash Eater - Darkness Rising

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Ash Easter play a spirited and visceral form of metal that isn't quite thrash, doom, punk or speed metal, but somewhere in-between all of these. Their 2020 full-length Darkness Rising is a well-formed album with a vintage feel, the production quality having a particularly authentic 70s sound. The record combines the sounds of early Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Judas Priest with some touches of 80s punk/metal hybrids too, such as Black Flag's slower experimental material and the stripped down psychedelic doom of St. Vitus. The energy is raw, infectious and quite addictive, and Darkness Rising is a joy to listen to.

Lyckanlust - Wistful

With a full release due out later this year, London based one-person black metal act Lyckanlust has released a two song demo that explores the remarkably diverse sounds of this project. The first track Suidae Ballet combines raw and aggressive black metal melodies with dissonant vocals and a heavy use of electronics that reminds me of Beherit, Ulver and even Sigh. Lyckanlust doesn't just stick to traditional black metal though, with the second track of this demo displaying a dungeon synth sound, along with the aforementioned electronics, to create something just as dark but more atmospheric than aggressive. It's a highly promising demo that is worth checking out if you're looking for black metal with a bit more colour.
