Thoughts on: Mind Over Metal Compilation Volumes 1 & 2 from Cave Dweller Music

When the guys over at Cave Dweller Music first told me about their plans to put together a charity compilation for Mental Health Month it was billed as a relatively small project that would probably involve tracks from just a few different artists. But such was the response they got in submissions that the project quickly spawned into something truly epic, consisting now of two separate volumes containing 53 tracks from different artists.

The compilations are both available to buy now on Bandcamp

It's an astonishing feat that they put together in just a few weeks, and it shows not only how much belief there is in the mental health cause, but also how wide spread and diverse that support is. Because it's fair to say that there are differing opinions on how best to tackle mental health, and the individual needs of each person will inevitably be different. However, the fact that it is being talked about in any shape or form can only be a good thing. Heavy and extreme music is inherently an emotional art form, but for too long in metal there has been a reluctance to really open up about mental health outside of the music. It's fantastic to see all these artists coming together to support charities that are helping to break down the mental health stigma.

It's not just the amount of music that's on these compilations that's so great, but also the quality of it. There's music, sometimes even brand new music, from some of the best artists across the metal and extreme underground. Whether you like your music doomy, blackened, noisey, psychedelic, droney, sludgey, thrashy, occulty, experimenty or all of the above, then you will find loads to enjoy on both volumes.
